Mike Downing
Jiu Jitsu Instructor

Mike started his Jiu Jitsu journey in Orillia, ON while going to college - learning and training with a work friend on grass fields and hard gymnasium floors. He later moved to Dartmouth, NS and ended up at a small club there, receiving formal training in a proper facility. Mike fell in love with the Jiu Jitsu community and forged strong bonds on the anvil of hard training and competition with teammates and tourney opponents both. Back in Ontario since 2019, Mike remains an active competitor and is dedicated to seeking out the toughest challenge he can find. Since recently being promoted to Brown Belt under Coach Alex, Mike has no shortage of incredible people and practitioners to test himself on!
Mike's tournament experience has led him to a heartfelt belief that effective practice of the fundamentals is the key to success. This is exemplified in Mike's involvement as a co-instructor for the Adult Beginner Program. Warm and welcoming and holding a huge soft spot for people with no previous experience, Mike's enthusiasm towards new practitioners is the good kind of contagious! Given the understandably considerable effort required to step into a martial arts club for the first time, Mike is dedicated to making a student's first weeks at the club as fun and exciting as they can be - with a penchant for making people want to come back for more!
A self-proclaimed "White Belt for Life", Mike is always hungry to learn new concepts, meet new people and expand his Jiu Jitsu knowledge. He welcomes you to join him on this journey and looks forward to the opportunity to provide support to new students.
